DataHub® application examples - What you can do

Networking Your Data

Networking OPC data and archiving to SQL database

A power generation company in the United States used DataHub to collect data from several OPC servers and then tunnel the data across a network to a SQL Server. The data was archived by exception, so that when the data changed in the plant, a new record was added to the SQL database (DataHub OPC DA Tunneller pack and DataHub OPC DA Logger pack).

Connecting OPC systems through a firewall without using DCOM

A pharmaceutical company in Hungary is using the OPC DataHub (DataHub OPC DA Tunneller pack) to connect OPC Servers and Clients across a network that has a firewall between the server and client computers. Using the OPC DataHub the company is able to avoid all DCOM and Windows permission problems normally associated with networking OPC data.

OPC server in Windows to Oracle in Linux

An IT manager in a municipality office has created a live data link between a Lookout OPC server in Windows and a custom Linux application. He has an OPC DataHub connected to his OPC server, mirroring data to a Cascade DataHub running in Linux. On the Linux side, he feeds the data into an Oracle database, and from there into his custom application. The data updates are so seamless that his Linux application thinks it is directly connected to the Lookout OPC server.

Real-time data from .NET program to Excel over a network

A company had a custom .NET application that was generating real-time data they wanted to analyze using Excel. The problem was the two programs were running on different network computers. The company used the DataHub API to connect from the .NET application to a OPC DataHub on the server computer and networked the data to a OPC DataHub on the client computer. From there a simple drag and drop made the data available in Excel.

Displaying live data in mobile devices

A Chicago based trading company is using the OPC DataHub to deliver real-time quote information from their back-office analysis computers to their floor traders on the stock exchange. The traders view the data in an Excel application running on tablet computers they are carrying. The data rates and reliable connection allow the traders to react immediately to changes in the market.

OPC server on Windows NT connected to client on Windows XP

A company in Germany is using the OPC DataHub (DataHub OPC DA Tunneller pack) to tunnel data between an OPC server on a Windows NT computer, over a network to a client application running on a Windows XP computer. This helps the client avoid serious problems configuring DCOM and Windows security permissions on both computers.

Tunnelling OPC data between production systems and MES

A large manufacturing company in the US is using the OPC DataHub (DataHub OPC DA Tunneller pack) to tunnel OPC data between production systems and Management Execution Systems (MES) at all of their facilities around the country. The OPC DataHub is used to completely avoid the need to configure DCOM or Windows security permissions.

Combining OPC Tunnelling, ODBC and Excel in one application

A European plastics manufacturer is using the OPC DataHub to access data from a group of OPC servers. Connecting an Excel spreadsheet to the OPC DataHub gives engineers a way to view and interact with the OPC server from a powerful and familiar tool. Connecting SQL Server to the OPC DataHub gives the planning and accounting staff access to up-to-the second figures and records. In order to get the OPC data where it's needed, the company uses the OPC DataHub to tunnel the data across a company network between different locations.
