One of the most valuable features of IntraVUE is one that you don't see happen, but yields the results that are most visible. Where other network software applications claim to automatically identify network devices, they do not automatically map them. Also, other network software applications do not always do a good job of dealing with multiple switches and hubs as are often found in industrial applications. In office applications, computers are often all wired back to large wiring closets. In industrial applications, there are often many small industrial grade switches throughout the facility, and these in turn are wired to larger switches. 

IntraVUE is unique because it:

• Automatically identifies network devices, including switches, hubs, and routers and
• Automatically maps the exact interconnections between devices in minutes and
• Automatically maintains the mapping of devices, including when devices change from one port on a switch to another or are moved to a different switch, and logging of the changes.

All that is required to setup the Automatic Identification and Mapping is to run the IntraVUE Administration Tool, which is launched for you as a wizard when you first install IntraVUE. Notice that IntraVUE can be setup to scan multiple network subnets, thus it can scan devices through routers if needed to map everything on multiple subnets in your plant network. The Administration Tool is also where you can change from one IntraVUE database to another, in the "Backup/Restore" section. For users of the Portable Test Tool/Standalone version of IntraVUE, this is where you can load/save configurations as you go from one jobsite to the next. We will visit some of the other Administrative settings later in the tour.   Next lets take a look at the first and most visible results that automatic mapping and maintenance provide.
