So you just heard the HMI is not communicating to one of the target PLCs. You have to go fix the problem fast:

• You know where the PLC is, but you don't know the path from the PLC to the HMI.
• You know how many switches the connection goes through. 
• When you go to the 24 port switch, you don't know which cable belongs to the PLC

If you have IntraVUE you have all these answers in moments! Whether you are running IntraVUE as a portable test tool or the server addition, the data is quickly at your fingertips. If you are running the server edition, the data is there for instant access. If you just walked into the plant as the local integrator on a service call, it's a simple matter of plugging in IntraVUE and letting it scan the network, which takes only a few minutes. Locate the offline device and you can trace it's connections all the way through from the HMI to the PLC.

Example #1: Here is a simple case of a device at 10.1.1.229 that is offline, as shown in red. Mouse over the connection and you see that it's connected to port 4 on the switch. Now you know that besides just checking the device to see if it's powered on and the connection is plugged in at the device, that you should go to port 4 on the switch and make sure that it shows a connection. You never left your desk to learn all that! Notice there are also some other offline devices shown in read at the right of the screen below. Lets investigate those next in an example of finding a communcations problem.
