One thing that is common regardless of business type or your role. Many times, front office network wiring is much different than that of the plant floor. Sure it may all be Cat5 10-Base-T cables. However, as seen in the following picture, the office usually has all of the wiring going back to a centralized equipment room or closet. Plant equipment is generally connected to widely distributed and small port count switches. It is this distributed architecture that makes a package that provides an accurate and true representation so important. In addition, the location in which the switch is being housed is generally the same enclosure with the end devices. The IT department does not often visit these electrical enclosures. Early applications have been seen to have similar architectures as the office but as more and more devices are being connected it is not practical to keep running lines back. Even commercial suppliers such as Cisco with their new Catalyst 2955 switch and GarrettCom have developed DIN mounted switches.
