The SNMP Suite provides automation systems with a timely view of the health of their Ethernet network devices, the overall Ethernet network traffic volume and overall Ethernet network status from within their HMI or controls environment. Automation professionals can now reliably incorporate the status of Hubs, Routers, Switches, PCs/Servers, UPS devices, and other Managed or Unmanaged devices directly into their automation systems.

Unmanaged Device Monitoring
Not all Ethernet network devices are SNMP managed. To help monitor any system from within your HMI, the SNMP suite contains a Ping driver which automatically generates OPC tags for each Unmanaged device defined. These "heartbeat" and "response time" tags provide a standardized and reliable way to monitor all devices in the Ethernet network.
Runtime Management of Device Polling
The SNMP suite supports Device Auto-Demotion for Managed or Unmanaged devices. Users can adjust Auto-Demotion parameters to allow drivers to temporarily place a device off-scan in the event that it is not responding. This allows the driver to continue to optimize its communications with other available devices on the same channel as well as notify the client application of the event. A new ScanFloor device property provides robust polling control when the control application can not tolerate a one size fits all approach to network device polls. An additional benefit of the ScanFloor setting is its ability to handle devices independently especially when Agent loading is a concern. _System tags expose Auto-Demotion and ScanFloor tags to any HMI or control application of your choosing.
Specific Driver Features
The SNMP Suite provides valuable insight into the performance of a variety of industrial control system networks. The controllers, software, and underlying control network make up a modern control system. The entire system can become unreliable without stable performance from all three components. With the SNMP Suite you can monitor and analyze your plant Ethernet-based network from within your existing HMI package and never have to rely on blind faith that the network is performing to specifications.
The SNMP driver also provides convenient "Specialty tags" to help users know more than the current value of a single polled OID. The tags include: History tags, Events tags, Table Offsets, and ScanFloor tags.
- Historical Data Attributes – Previous Value, Delta Time, Moving Average
- Historical values are generated by the SNMP driver (not the remote Agent/device) when an OID has valid historical modifiers appended to it.
- Events Tags – Events_001, Events_001_001, Events_001_FieldCnt, Events_Count
- A FIFO-based queue to receive Traps / Notifications from previously configured Agents.
- Table Offsets – OID
- Table access is accomplished by enumerating columns of a table. The SNMP Device driver uses an array-like notation for Table access.
- ScanFloor property – _ScanRateFloor, _ScanRateFloorLock
SNMP devices are typically scanned at much slower rates than other controls equipment. Scanning an SNMP device too quickly may result in degraded device performance. The Scan Rate Floor has been added to prevent users from inadvertently overloading Agent/devices with read requests in the order of milliseconds.
The Scan Rate Floor is the minimum rate to scan SNMP devices. The default is 1000 milliseconds. When set (to a non-zero value) the SNMP driver will never scan the remote device more often than the specified scan rate. Note that an OPC client can still poll the server and obtain the last read value at a much faster OPC Group Update Rate. Finally, the ´Lock´ option will lock the Scan Rate for this device to the given value. When Locked, the driver will always poll at the Scan Rate setting regardless of OPC client update rates that are below or above this rate.
SNMP Traps Support
Many SNMP-manageable devices can be configured to send unsolicited data to network management software systems such as iSNMP. By configuring an SNMP device to send data without being "polled" such as when a critical system tag goes into an unfavorable state, you can reduce the need for "polling" the network device. The SNMP driver supports receiving SNMP Trap data via Events tags as well as through defined Trap OIDs.
Auto Device Discovery
Both the SNMP driver (for managed devices) and the Ping driver (for unmanaged devices) now support Auto Device Discovery. By specifying a desired
range of IP Addresses and certain other parameters such as port number, protocol and community, these drivers can discover devices on your network and add
them to your channel, speeding your configuration time dramatically.

With built-in support of these Client/Server technologies, the TOP Server allows you to quickly access device data without the need to use an intermediary software bridge (i.e. OPC Link) as is done when using a strictly OPC only communications server. For Wonderware users the familiar look and feel of FastDDE/SuiteLink tag database setup is maintained. Backwards compatibility for legacy DDE is also supported.

Direct connection to the iFix Process Database allows you to skip the OPC Power Tool. Enabling the iFix PDB interface on the TOP Server Tools->Options menus causes the TOP server to appear as a native Intellution driver named "IDS". Legacy Support for DDE
While OPC has become the defacto format of choice for communications drivers in the automation market, we realize that not everyone can replace their client software with the latest OPC client versions. For this reason, the TOP Server is one of the few OPC servers on the market to also simulataneously support Wonderware's FastDDE and Suitelink interfaces, Rockwell's AdvanceDDE and Microsoft's standard DDE interfaces for connecting the TOP Server to your client application. With the TOP Server you can connect to your legacy DDE clients today and move smoothly to the world of OPC when you are ready and not have to worry about replacing or re-configuring the communications driver connecting you to your production machinery.

Runtime Configuration Changes A very unique feature to this product is the ability to change your configuration while the server is running and has clients connected. The connected client application has access to a group of system tags that allow the client to request the TOP Server to change which network card it is using, change which com port it is using, change the IP address of the target device, change the Device ID of a target serial device, change serial communications parameters including RTS line control and flow control, and change diagnostic settings. This capability enables you to do Redundancy at the network media, serial connection media, and device levels -- your client application makes the determination that the target device is no longer operable by any means you choose, including monitoring our _Error system tag for communications errors, and when the client application wants the TOP Server to switch, it simply writes to the appropriate system level tag to change network connection, com port, or target device ID/IP address. Redundancy is just one of the powerful types of complex applications that these runtime-configurable features can enable.
Import Tag Databases from KEPServer Your existing KEPServer version 3.x/4.x tag databases are readable by the new TOP Server so you can migrate your existing application seamlessly to the TOP Server.
Online Full Time The TOP Server allows you to make changes to your tag database configuration at any time. In older versions, you could be online, but not add tags, or be offline to add tags but not read data. With the TOP Server you make changes when you need to, on the fly.
User Management With powerful features such as online changes, you want to make sure you manage who is allowed to make what changes. The User Manager in the TOP Server lets you define what different people can change and update in the servers' configuration.
Tag Management You want to organize your tag database around your process. With the TOP Server we've taken full advantage of OPC grouping capabilities to let you segregate and organize your tags the way you want them. Drag and Drop configuration lets you quickly move, add, copy large numbers of tags quickly and easily. CSV (Ascii comma-delimited) format import and export lets you bring in your tags from an Excel worksheet or export them, edit them in bulk and bring them back in.
Tag Scaling Display your data in units that are meaningful to you. The TOP Server supports Linear and Square Root tag scaling. You define the display format and the engineering units display string to meet your needs.
Diagnostics The TOP Server family of communications products provide real time diagnostics on all tag read/write operations that can be viewed in your OPC client to keep tabs on what is going on in the server.
