Project Settings

Project Settings Saved With Configuration

TOP Server V5 Project Configuration Files (.opf) are now enhanced to contain certain TOP Server project level settings that were previously stored in a separate .ini configuration file.  This makes transferring a TOP Server configuration to another machine much easier, requiring only that the TOP Server .opf project configuration file be transferred.

NOTE for DDE or FastDDE Users

TOP Server V5 must run in Interactive Mode and will not function for either of these client connection interfaces when running as a Service.  SuiteLink will work when TOP Server is running as a Service.

TOP Server Project Properties Menu Option

The project level settings are now accessible in TOP Server by going to File | Project Properties.  There are a maximum of six different sections possible here, depending on which Native Client Interfaces (FastDDE/Suitelink and iFIX PDB) are installed and will be used on the computer.

  1. Identification
  2. OPC Settings
  3. OPC Compliance
  4. iFIX PDB Settings (if Proficy iFIX is installed and Interface was Selected During Installation)
  5. FastDDE/Suitelink (if FastDDE/Suitelink Client Installed and Interface was Selected During Installation))
  6. DDE (If Interface was Selected During Installation)
  7. OPC A&E Settings
  8. OPC UA Settings

The Identification Section provides the ability to give a particular TOP Server configuration a descriptive title and list any comments needed about the project.

Some of the common ways this can prove useful are:

  • Multiple TOP Server configurations are being managed at a location
  • To provide insightful notes about why certain settings were chosen.
  • As a location for revision tracking notes

OPC DA Settings

The OPC Settings Section provides the flexibility to access and alter TOP Server’s behavior and functionality for OPC Client connections pertaining to the particular OPC Specifications and functions supported.

This can be particularly useful for:

  • Forcing TOP Server to use only a particular OPC DA Specification for client compatibility
  • Making addressing hints available to browsing client applications
  • Exposing TOP Server tag properties as tags themselves
  • Adjusting timing for OPC Client notifications when the server is shutting down
  • Increasing or decreasing the timeout for OPC Synchronous transactions

TOP Server has been designed to provide the highest level of compatibility with the OPC Foundation’s specifications.  The OPC Compliance Section provides access to settings specific to TOP Server support for the OPC DA specifications.

These settings are exposed to allow for maximum compatibility with the large number of OPC Client applications available that may implement different interpretations of the OPC DA specifications.

The ability to edit these settings makes it possible for almost any OPC DA Client to connect to the TOP Server.

TOP Server’s support of native iFIX connections shows up in the FIX SCU as the “IDS Industrial Data Server”. The iFIX PDB Settings section contains parameters that allow users to adjust the behavior between the processing of the iFIX process database (PDB) tags and the TOP Server tags.

Note:  The GE iFIX PDB Settings section will only be displayed in Project Properties if Proficy iFIX is installed on the computer and the “GE iFIX Native Interface” must be selected during TOP Server installation from the Native Client Interfaces section.

TOP Server's support of Wonderware's FastDDE and SuiteLink client interfaces simplifies the task of connecting the server with Wonderware applications.

The Wonderware connectivity toolkit is used to allow quick access to device data without the use of intermediary bridging software (no FSGateway or OPC Link needed), allowing the fastest, most reliable connection.

Note: In order for both proper FastDDE/SuiteLink operation and for the FastDDE/Suitelink section to be displayed, the Wonderware Common Components (or Archestra Framework) must be installed on the TOP Server PC.  It is also required that the “Wonderware SuiteLink and FastDDE” option be selected during TOP Server installation from the Native Client Interfaces section.

While TOP Server is first and foremost an OPC server, there are still a number of client applications that require Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) to share data.  The DDE section allows users to determine how the server provides DDE data to DDE client applications.

Options available include:

  • Enabling/Disabling supported DDE Formats
  • Enabling/Disabling NetDDE
  • Configuring the DDE Service Name
  • Configuring update rate (for batch DDE responses)

Note:  It is necessary to select the “Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)” option during TOP Server installation from the Native Client Interfaces section.

The TOP Server offers OPC A&E connectivity as well as OPC DA and OPC UA.  The settings in the Project Properties OPC AE tab affect both the standard Event Log A&E events and the OPC A&E plug-inClick here to learn more about OPC A&E.

The TOP Server supports the OPC UA Standard.  The settings can be found on the OPC UA tab in the Project Properties.  Click here to learn more.  Click on Configuration to learn more about how to configure the TOP Server’s UA Server interface.

The TOP Server supports the OPC .NET 3.0 (Xi) interface.  The interface is enabled under the OPC .NET tab in the Project Properties.  Click here to learn more.  Click on Configuration to learn more about how to configure the TOP Server’s OPC .NET Server interface.
